A follow-up to Mel Gibson’s 2004 hit biblical drama ‘The Passion of the Christ’ which will focus on Christ’s resurrection is being developed. This was confirmed by Gibson’s filmmaking partner of many years, Randall Wallace, who reluctantly revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he has started writing a script for a sequel to the original movie, which THR referred to as the “most successful independent movie of all-time”.

The faith-based indie movie was reportedly the third highest grossing film of its year of release after ‘Shrek’ and ‘Spider Man’, earning $612 million worldwide off a $30 million budget.

Wallace, who confessed that the project is becoming too difficult to keep under wraps revealed that he and Gibson decided to start working on a sequel to ‘The Passion of the Christ’ while making ‘Hacksaw Ridge’, a World War II drama about military medic Desmond Doss. Wallace wrote the screenplay for ‘Braveheart’, ‘We Were Soldiers’ among others. He studied Religion at Duke University and says the resurrection is his specialty “I always wanted to tell this story”, he says. “The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more to tell”.

A sequel to ‘The Passion of the Christ’, 12 years later may make Mel Gibson resurrect like a phoenix from the ashes of his widely documented setbacks, according to some quarters. Neither Gibson nor his representative has commented on his involvement concerning the planned sequel. However, he reportedly stated during Liberty University’s commencement ceremony that he is interested in making a sequel to the original movie.
