Amanda Gorman, a 19-year-old Harvard University sophomore is the United States’ first National Youth Poet Laureate. Gorman was reportedly named America’s Inaugural Youth Poet Laureate in April, 2017 by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

While growing up Amanda Gorman struggled with a hearing impairment and speech impediment but it was never going to hinder her from becoming the poet, activist, author and brand ambassador that she is today.

@amandascgorman | via InstagramGorman is the first youth to become Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles, prior to her becoming the Inaugural Youth Poet Laureate of the West (Western USA). The OZY Genius Award winner was subsequently brought to the attention of Michelle Obama and now, Gorman is a HERLead Ambassador for Vital Voices, a global women network founded by Hillary Clinton.

Amanda Gorman, according to the New York Times, “writes poetry with a cleareyed mix of autobiography, social issues and historical motifs”. She read her poem ‘An American Lyric’ at the inaugural reading of her friend, Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith, at the Library of Congress — the first time a youth poet ever opened for a Library of Congress Poet Laureate Consultant.

Gorman’s 1Pen1Page organization helps “students storytellers to change the world”. Despite all her achievements at such a young age, Amanda Gorman told the New York Times that she would love to run for the office of the President of the United States (POTUS) someday. In fact, her Instagram bio reads “President 2036” and she wants you to “put that in your iCloud calendar”.

About 17 models have reportedly been chosen to walk in the show for the first time with 14 returning Victoria’s Secret Angels like Candice Swanepoel, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Leomie Anderson, Maria Borges and Karlie Kross. The Society Management agent, Darren Jay, is one of the first people to announce via social media that Nicholas, Cabo Verdean model Alécia Morais, Estelle Chen and Amilna Estevao are going to be part of the 17 new comers from diverse backgrounds to the Victoria’s Secret show, which Nicholas, Estevao and Morais described as a dream come true. Estelle Chen also took to Instagram on August 23 to express her excitement at the news “I can’t believe it’s happening… I’m incredibly happy to announce that I AM WALKING THE VICTORIA’S SECRET 2017 SHOW”.

Meanwhile, some quarters have begun to wonder if the move is an effort to allow for diversity on the part of Victoria’s Secret, considering that the show had been called out in the past for its “homogeneous lineup of tall, thin, white and Latin women”, according to an article on refinery29.com. However, Angolan model Maria Borges, who made history in 2015 as the first model to rock a natural hair at a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, thanked Victoria’s Secret “for giving the opportunity to these beautiful models to shine”. Borges will reportedly appear for the fifth time on the Victoria’s Secret runway this year.

Naomie Harris Gets Honoured with OBE

In case you have not heard, British actress and Oscar nominee Naomie Harris has been officially appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen of England. The Queen reportedly honoured Harris during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Thursday, February 23, 2017, for her services to drama.

HELLO! Canada reported that the James Bond 007 and Moonlight star gave credit to director Danny Boyle after the ceremony, when she told reporters “He really gave me a chance when nobody else would at the start of my career when I had no credits to my name. Then later on he gave me a part in Frankenstein at the National after having left drama school ten years before and not having done any theatre. He took a chance again and that’s how Bond happened”.

Later, the actress whose filmography also includes After the Sunset, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Collateral Beauty, posted a picture from the ceremony on Facebook with this long caption: “As the daughter of an immigrant, it was with an added sense of pride that I received an OBE from the Queen today. I spent the ceremony reflecting on how my deceased grandparents would have felt seeing their granddaughter receive this kind of recognition from a country they fought so hard to be accepted by. I am proud to be British, and proud to be of Jamaican/Trinidadian descent, and I am incredibly proud of all the sacrifices my grandparents made so that I could live my dreams.”

Harris said she was impressed by how youthful the Queen looked, “She looked incredibly young and really healthy – and she has good skin.”, she added.
