“I can’t believe I am typing this right now I am so happy to announce that I will be walking the Victoria secret fashion show 2017”. Those words formed part of the caption of an Instagram video that Mayowa Nicholas posted on August 23. The Nigerian model had obviously found out that she had been selected as one of the new faces to walk the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in November 2017.
About 17 models have reportedly been chosen to walk in the show for the first time with 14 returning Victoria’s Secret Angels like Candice Swanepoel, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Leomie Anderson, Maria Borges and Karlie Kross. The Society Management agent, Darren Jay, is one of the first people to announce via social media that Nicholas, Cabo Verdean model Alécia Morais, Estelle Chen and Amilna Estevao are going to be part of the 17 new comers from diverse backgrounds to the Victoria’s Secret show, which Nicholas, Estevao and Morais described as a dream come true. Estelle Chen also took to Instagram on August 23 to express her excitement at the news “I can’t believe it’s happening… I’m incredibly happy to announce that I AM WALKING THE VICTORIA’S SECRET 2017 SHOW”.
Meanwhile, some quarters have begun to wonder if the move is an effort to allow for diversity on the part of Victoria’s Secret, considering that the show had been called out in the past for its “homogeneous lineup of tall, thin, white and Latin women”, according to an article on refinery29.com. However, Angolan model Maria Borges, who made history in 2015 as the first model to rock a natural hair at a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, thanked Victoria’s Secret “for giving the opportunity to these beautiful models to shine”. Borges will reportedly appear for the fifth time on the Victoria’s Secret runway this year.
